kitchen essentials

i have a new favorite piece of equipment... if you live in a small space and are desperate for a little more worksurface, definitely look into a magnetic knife rack. i had mine mounted this past weekend and love it!

also note, whisk (bedford and n 4th) has a drop-off knife sharpening service. what's cool about it? you can get your knives back in the same day. just drop your set off anytime before noon on wednesdays and they'll be ready for pick-up that evening. it's so nice to be able to glide through tomatoes again : ) and the lady that sharpens the knives does it by hand so you can give her just about anything with a dull blade~

There are a few things my mother taught me to always keep on hand.   Now that I have my own kitchen, I know there's nothing worse than having all your ingredients lined up, ready to go, and realizing you need to make another trip to the grocer!  Keep plenty of these items in your back pocket : )

For cooking:
  • Plenty of Kosher salt
  • Land O Lakes Butter
  • Granulated garlic powder
  • Pre-chopped Mirapoix (you can freeze this too!)
  • Roasted Red Pepper Flakes
  • Good olive oil
  • Cheap vegetable oil (for when you have enough flavor and just need a cooking agent that will stand up to high cooking temps)
  • Lemons
For baking:
  • Crisco baking sticks
  • Domino Light Brown Sugar
  • Domino Confectioner Sugar
  • Davis Baking Powder
  • Pure Vanilla Extract
  • Flour (I like to sift)
Hardware
  • Kitchenaid Mixer (this fine piece of equipment changed my life)
  • Mandolin (awesome for slicing and julienning in bulk)
  • Dishwasher safe cutting mats
  • Garlic press
General
  • Wine (not just for cooking, this will keep the mood in your kitchen much lighter : )

  1. What is mirapiox? I don't have it! Do I need it? If I need it, what for? Help me Katy Lee! :)

  2. it sounds much fancier than it actually is! mirapoix is just diced veggies; typically onion, carrots and celery. you know how it can take ages to dice all that stuff up by hand? the pre-chopped stuff is convenient when you're making stew, soups, sauces, etc. so nah, you don't really need it but it's nice to have if you want to save a little time : )
